September Screening: Studio Ghibli Fest

Studio Ghibli Fest is underway! Gkids, who host the annual event that is held all over North America until November 1, is showcasing “Howl’s Moving Castle” from September 23-27. The film is one of Studio Ghibli’s best-selling movies and notable works, and it is easy to see why. The movie’s beautiful art, stunning music, meaningful settings, and the childlike wonder that is captured in the essence of the movie charms every watcher.

Art and setting give every picture meaning that adds to each scene. It is like the scenes foretell what actions are to come and determine the direction of the story. Vibrant settings allude to big pivotal moments in the movie, as well as hint at what characters may be feeling at the moment. What also contributes to the beauty of the art is how well the lighting influences the tone. Dim settings create a tiring or calming effect in contrast to vivid locations that have grandeur. Although they cannot be used often, when employed they add much more to the scene. Lastly, the grandiosity of each location, even if it is a small town, feels like it is broad and has a purpose to carry on in the movie. Each area is used to its full potential, creating a vast land that will soon be explored.

Another prominent aspect of the movie is the music. Specifically, the theme is named “The Marry Go Round of Life”, a piece by Joe Hisaishi. He has composed themes for other Studio Ghibli movies, though this one stands out because of the pleasant sound and versatility. “The Marry Go Round of Life” eases in by starting off calmly, reflecting the rising action and the somber tone of the scene. Those are just two ways it was used. The music, art, and setting complement each other so well that it is difficult to see beyond them.

“Howl’s Moving Castle” is a masterpiece with beautiful art, stunning music, meaningful settings, and a childlike charm that will awe watchers. These elements complement the movie to the extent that it is much more than just art and music.
