Is Chess Becoming More Popular?

Chess has always been a game that requires strategy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It's a game that has been played for centuries and has evolved over time, but the basic rules and principles remain the same. Chess can be played by people of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to grandmasters.

The rise of online gaming platforms and chess apps has made chess more accessible to people worldwide. People can now play against opponents from different parts of the world, watch grandmaster games online, and improve their skills by analyzing their gameplay using software tools.

Moreover, the popularity of chess has also opened opportunities for chess players to participate in tournaments and competitions, both online and in-person. The prize money for these tournaments has also increased, making it a viable career option for professional players.

One of the many factors that make the game very entertaining is the film “The Queen’s Gambit”. It is one of the many movies that have helped boost the spotlight on the chess world.

“After ‘The Queen's Gambit’, our site traffic stabilized to around 4 million daily active users,” director Saad Abdali said on chessnews.info

Another factor that helped boost the popularity of chess was, surprisingly, COVID-19. With many people being stuck at home with nothing to do, many people found chess, which helped alleviate their boredom.

“In March 2020 alone, our number of daily active users rose from 280,000 to more than 1 million,” Abdali added.

Chess has become popular again thanks to various factors. Its entertainment value, the covid lockdown, and the game's mechanics itself have made it a game that appeals to people of all ages and skill levels. Chess will continue to grow and evolve as more people discover the joys of playing it.
