‘Love Hurts’

‘Love Hurts’ was not well received by critics, had mixed reviews by audiences

“Love Hurts” was released on February 7, 2025. As of February 18, 2025, “Love Hurts” has grossed $13 million in the United States and Canada and $1 million in other territories, for a worldwide gross of $14 million. Although this isn’t terrible, the movie has not made back its modest production budget of only $18 million.

The movie was not well received by critics, receiving 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.4/10 on IMDb. The audience rated the movie slightly higher, getting 61% on the Popcornmeter. Critics and the audience both voiced several issues with "Love Hurts".

“With DeBose and various romantic subplots awkwardly sidelined, “Love Hurts” is a sore case of squandered potential, running out of steam long before its taut 83 minutes are up,” Radio Times critic Kevin Harley said.

Many critics share Harley’s sentiments, with one of the main complaints being that the plot of "Love Hurts" is severely lacking in several areas. Many complain that the plot was overly simple and that the decent fight scenes can’t make up for the severe plot holes.

“But when the bullets land and the destruction is complete, the quiet of the lackluster script and its nonsensical dialogue is a painful reminder of any love for the film subsequently lost,” Seattle Refined reviewer Candice McMillan said.

The dialogue within “Love Hurts” does not help to mend the lackluster plot of the movie. There was little chemistry between the male and female main leads, with chemistry being pivotal in a romance. "Love Hurts" has a few great fight scenes, but those scenes are overshadowed by all the other issues in the movie.

“Ultimately, it’s a shame Ke Huy Quan’s first post-Oscar lead role in over three decades proves [to be] equal parts underwhelming and disappointing,” That Shelf critic Mel Valentin said. “Love Hurts" is a misfire by any other name.”
