Is ‘Wednesday’ Worth the Hype?

I’ve seen the show “Wednesday” two times now and I can confidently say that it is worth the hype. “Wednesday” is a new show on Netflix that focuses on Wednesday Addams, originally from “The Addams Family” series. In the show, Wednesday gets suspended from her school for dumping piranhas into a swimming pool full of students. Her parents decide to send her to the school they went to as kids, Nevermore Academy. Nevermore is a school for outcasts, which consists of werewolves, vampires, sirens, etc. After arriving at Nevermore, Wednesday learns that a monster has been killing people in the local town, and after finding connections between the monster, the school, and herself, she attempts to find out who or what the monster is.

Wednesday is played by Jenna Ortega, and she is undoubtably the best part of the show. She perfectly displays the cold, emotionless character that is Wednesday Addams, but she also distinguishes herself from the past interpretations of Wednesday. Jenna Ortega manages to display Wednesday as the self-centered, non-empathetic person she is, but she is also able to express how she is still human. Wednesday isolates herself from everyone, as she feels that emotion will do nothing but slow her down, but as the show goes on, she struggles with the fact that she is starting to care for people, and that those people also care for her. Jenna Ortega perfectly shows this internal conflict through her acting, and it makes you genuinely feel connected to the character. All of the other actors in the show do a great job with their characters, but none of them compare to Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday.

Wednesday can be described as a mystery comedy with a few horror elements. The pacing is very good, as the story has many unexpected twists and turns that keep you wanting to start the next episode. The jokes are consistently funny, as many of them consist of Wednesday’s dark and sarcastic sense of humor. The mystery is done very well. It is not predictable and when everything is revealed you will be very surprised and slightly heartbroken. As for the horror, it is not very intense. Some scenes are very tense and will have you on the edge of your seat, but that’s about it. A few scenes are pretty bloody, but there isn’t really any gore. This isn’t a complaint though, the tone of the show isn’t too dark, so a bunch of horror and gore would not really fit in.

If you’re a fan of mysteries or comedies, I would definitely recommend giving “Wednesday” a try, and even if you aren’t the biggest fan of those genres, I would still recommend watching it. There is a reason that it became the most watched English Netflix show in a week, beating season 4 of “Stranger Things”.
